Week 29 Newsletter

From Mrs. Porter - In grammar we have begun a new unit on adverbs. The students will learn that adverbs tell how, when, where and to what extent in regards to the verb that it modifies.

As we continue to study the states and capitals, we move on to the central states this week.  Our next quiz over these states will be on April 28.  Do not forget to help them keep the previous states in mind, because we will have a test over all 50 states and capitals in June.

Last week, we begin chapter 7 in math.  I am allowing each student to earn an individual award (one penny), if they complete an extra part of practice from the lesson.  Each lesson has a “Math on the Spot” video and a more complex problem.  I believe more than half of the class will be able to solve the problem without much assistance, but watching the lesson’s video will help them solve it completely.  To watch the video there are two options: 1. They can login to their math account (www-k6.thinkcentral.com) 2. They can use any phone or tablet with a camera and a QR Code Reader to scan and to watch the video (no logins needed).

Mrs. DeBra has asked me to remind you that there will be a book fair in the school library during the week of May 8th. Our class can bring money on Tuesday, the 9th, to purchase books during our library time. Check on the school website for more information.

For our next book report, we will be doing a Newbery Award or Honor book report.  Students will need to read one of these books on May 1.  The students will need to have the book in class until May 12, so plan ahead if it needs to be renewed from a library.  We will be writing a formal book report entirely in class, so no at home work is needed with this one except for reading it by May 1.

A few parents have already stepped forward with some wonderful donations, but as a reminder; I like to have a fun auction for the students to spend their pennies earned throughout the year.  If you have any items you can donate to the End of Year Auction, from now until the end of the May, I would appreciate it.  Any inexpensive toys or crafts and fun items for the kids to do during summertime is what I am looking for.  Items from the past have been: ice cream cone coupons, rubber balls, squirt guns, activity books.  I accept gently used items too, if you want to get rid of something others would enjoy.

Current Bible verse:   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  John 1:1,14   (Verse Test on 4/25)

Next Bible verse:  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (Verse Test on 5/5)
